Garmin Striker 7sv – Review

The Striker 7sv is Garmin’s latest offering aimed at being entry-level in terms of price but a powerhouse in terms of features. With the Striker 7sv, you’ll get traditional SONAR, GPS, CHIRP DownVu and SideVu SONAR – so this unit is literally all you need for your boat.

This model packs a roomy 7 inch screen, so you can comfortably view lots of data at once using the split screen option like in the product image above.

The GPS receiver lets you mark hotspots so you can return to them very easily next time you are out fishing. Sometimes you’ll stumble across a great area of structure or feeding where there are plenty of fish to be found – but it’s a big lake, and how will you remember the exact spot? Use a hotspot and literally have X mark the spot.

When you mark a spot, the Striker 7sv will draw a path on the screen wherever your boat goes, so it will also remember the exact route you took – effectively saving your route around any obstacles such as buoys, docks, and anything that you may have to go around.

Installation is also fairly straightforward – all the SONAR frequencies are pushed out through a single transducer, so you don’t have to clutter up your boat’s transom with lots of different sensors – just one will do the trick and give you a nice, clean installation.

Garmin units also ship with a convenient trolling motor mount adapter – so if you’d rather not do any drilling to fit the transducer on the transom, you can snap it into the trolling motor mount and place the mount on your motor.

If it’s portability you need – especially if you are fishing from a kayak – then Garmin makes a portable conversion case that lets you carry the Striker wherever you go.

The Striker 7sv also eliminates your need for a separate flasher unit. If you like to take your boat out in the summer, and bring out your ice augers for the winter, then you can use the Striker as an ice flasher, too. The flasher function is also useful for crappie jigging and any kind of stationary fishing.
